I first heard the insane Bunny Wailer track “Bald Headed Woman” in Kenya. It’s one of my favorites. The rhythm tilts and wobbles, punctuated by keyboard jabs and what sounds like a saw wiggling into the microphone. Bunny -the softest spoken and most militantly Rastafarian member of Bob Marley’s Wailers- pushes his voice to extremes. And the lyrics are all about those crazy baldheads— people who refuse to embrace Rasta dreadlocks and want to bring Bunny down with their decidedly un-blessed ways.

But the song has a long history before Bunny Wailer turned it into a Rasta anthem.

I knew this trip to London would remind me of Max, but I did not know how. It came to me like a dive into water, a physical sensation surging swiftly upward from my knees to the top of my head, shortening my breath for an instant and removing me from the present. I was both there, in the arrival terminal of Heathrow airport, and there again.

And as I walked, awkwardly and burdened, pushing a cart of production equipment with my right hand, and dragging my father’s old suitcase behind me with my left, I felt the waiting for him. It felt like an old happiness washed over and made smooth and dull. In there too, a chip of annoyance, of remembering again what it was to have my life alone interrupted by a loved one left behind. It makes me a brattish young man, that memory, and I feel small shame, tiny regrets, which adorn it like silk.

I am unsure how this new job is going. I have lived long enough now to know that the feelings I have the first moments of almost every new situation often appear later as naive, misdirected, too painted with my own judgments and anxieties to seem much at all like the essence of it all will seem. It is not until such thoughts join the currents of those around me that I can feel accurately. Right now I am as a rogue is, separated from my old pack and just now attempting to join another. I do some sniffing around, but mostly I am the one under scrutiny, the one being sniffed. It is much more difficult for me to feel at ease and accepted in a professional capacity. I believe it is because I am never doing my profession. Always someone else’s.

How am I to be happy ever if I cannot feel a joy of labor? Am I better a primitive thing, a starfish on a rock somewhere living by what the great sea permits to pass by? I wish I were an engine, but there is something in me weak.

Stuart Watson is drinking what is most likely a diet pepsi out of a straw across from me. We are separated by a gray linoleum table about 3 feet wide and 2 and a half deep. It is one of about 20 such tables at Jake’s Diner in Greensboro, North Carolina. We are here because one week ago, Stuart’s black Volvo (whose floor flutters over bumps with the bounce of emptied pistachio shells) broke down and we left it at Casey’s Auto Repair.

Turned out it was just a spark plug, but Stuart had already rented the champagne Kia for a week. This chocolate milk is packaged, but it’s not bad.
